Warfarin (Coumadin) Labeling

CoumadinThe label for warfarin (Coumadin drags, Bristol-Myers Squibb) now includes an explanation that one’s genetic makeup may influence how a patient responds to the drug. Warfarin is used to prevent blood clots, heart attacks, and stroke.

This change highlights the opportunity for health care providers to use genetic tests to improve their initial estimate of the reasonable generic warfarin dose for each patient in order to reduce the risk of bleeding complications. An analysis had indicated that patients were responding to the drug in different ways, sometimes according to whether they had variations of the genes CYP 2C9 and VKO RC1.

Survey: Many Doctors Not Recommending HPV Vaccine For Young Girls

coumadin-warfarinA recent survey shows that more than 50% of Texas physicians are not following the recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices— that all 11- and 12-year-old girls receive the quadrivalent human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. The vaccine was approved in 2006.

Home Therapy for DVT Is Safe

med_coumadin5Long-term home treatment with once-daily subcutaneous (SQ) tinzaparin sodium (Innohep, Pharmion) appears to be effective for patients with deep-vein thrombosis (DVT), compared with “usual care”—tinzaparin followed by long-term therapy with warfarin generic sodium (Coumadin, Bristol-Myers Squibb).
